John Simmons revolutionizes the clothing industry.
1826
Simmons produces the first ready-made clothing business in the U.S. in his second-floor shop in Quincy Market. Cutting cloth in standard sizes to make suits revolutionizes the clothing industry. Simmons business expands to take up the entire second floor of the Quincy market building by 1844 and become the largest wholesale clothing business in New England. The suits produced by Simmons continue to be hand-sewn, however, since the sewing machine has yet to be invented.
